Junior High Change #3 – Body & Appearance
In today’s email, we dive into the third of five big changes that 6th–8th graders go through. We’ll unpack what’s happening and what it means for you as a middle school ministry leader.
#3 – Body & Appearance
Junior high is basically puberty’s playground. It’s when your voice, mood, and face all change without warning—like surprise parties, but way less fun. The good news is that we’ve all been through it and somehow managed to survive!
A few things to consider:
- Everyone hits puberty at their own weird time. That’s why some 12-year-olds look like they could run for president with a full beard already.
- Nearly everyone’s body grows out of sync. Maybe their feet hit a growth spurt while the rest of them is still catching up. (Hello, giant sneakers!)
- Weird is the norm. Students aren’t just noticing all these changes in themselves—oh no—they’re also very aware of everyone else’s new awkwardness.
As a result of all these wild changes, students start playing the comparison game—like, all the time. They’re suddenly super tuned in to what everyone else looks like, what they’re wearing, and what they might be thinking about them. (Spoiler: most are too busy worrying about themselves.) So yeah, they often feel a little weird and unsure of themselves.
What can a junior high leader do about all this?
- Be aware of what’s going on in their hearts and minds, so you can be a steady voice cheering them on. Encourage them often and point out their greatest qualities.
- Talk about finding your identity in Jesus like it’s your favorite playlist—on repeat. Not just once, but a lot. Let them know their identity isn’t in how they look or measure up compared to others. Teach on it, talk about it in small group, and make it a part of all that you do.
- Normalize all the physical changes. Share your own middle school horror stories (yes, even the one with the bad haircut). Be open and honest about how you did—or didn’t—find Jesus in it all.
Good thing the junior highers in your ministry have awesome leaders like YOU—rocking the awkward, embracing the chaos, and pointing them to Jesus. Seriously, if middle school had a superhero squad, you’d be wearing the cape (probably over a hoodie and some Crocs, but still… legendary).
