When we take time to notice the beauty and wonder of creation, we have a better understanding of how much God cares for and loves each of us.

Use this lesson to remind students that God reveals himself through his creation.

Bible: Romans 1:20

Bottom line: God reveals himself through his creation.

SUPPLIES

• Magazines
• Scissors
• Glue sticks
• Large poster board
• Markers
• Pens
• Paints and brushes
• Chalk

OPENING ACTIVITY – CREATION GRAFFITI WALL

Place magazines, glue sticks, scissors, and other art supplies around the room.

Hang large poster boards or tape butcher paper on the walls of your space.

Say: Today, we are going to graffiti our walls!

Okay, don’t get to excited… we are only going to draw on the places that we have covered around the room.

But, there’s a challenge: I want you to show me God’s amazing, creating powers by using pictures in magazines or even drawing your own pictures or words.

I want you to ‘wow’ me and leave us all with a sense of just how incredible God’s creation is – the earth, plants, animals, humans, discoveries, little known facts… you can even use your phones to find cool facts about animals or interesting info about the world that God created.

Let your creative juices flow because today is all about creation.

Some students might need help getting started so be ready to give some ideas – such as making a collage of their favorite animals or suggest that they find a place in the world they’d love to visit.

TEACH

Once everyone has finished adding their graffiti to the walls, begin the lesson.

Say: Let’s take a couple of minutes and really check out what we’ve created.

As you do, imagine you are seeing all of these things for the first time.

It can become so easy to get used to God’s creation, and the world, and even focus on all that is wrong – but, right now, let yourself enjoy creation.

Imagine you are in these places or seeing these animals… for the first time.

Give the students plenty of time to experience the Wall.

Encourage them to share what they are seeing with each other.

Gather back together.

Say: Tell me the things that surprised you on our wall of creation.

What did you see as if you were seeing it for the first time?

What words come to mind as we think about God’s creation?

Even invite youth to write their words on the creation wall as they share.

Read Romans 1:20 (NLT).

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

Say: We live in a world where it can be easy to forget that we didn’t make all of this.

Sure, we made cities, buildings, gadgets… but look past those things and just look at God’s amazing creation.

What does The Creation reveal about its Creator?

Write down the things the students share about God.

God invites us to enjoy what He has made for us.

Sadly, we often get it wrong.

Just think about the different ways we’ve treated God and his creation.

What are some of the ways we’ve dishonored and even destroyed God’s creation?

The beginning of the Bible talks about how God created the heavens and the earth, and how humankind began in a garden.

In Revelation 21 and 22, scripture ends right back in a garden in a New or ‘renewed’ heaven and earth.

What do you imagine a renewed heaven and earth to look like?

Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is here (Matthew 4:17), and could it be that God wants to use us, his creation, to help renew things?

We can truly reflect the very nature of God by doing what God does: create and recreate.

Ask: How could you truly love and care for God’s creation?

Write down the ways the students share to create and care.

Let’s choose one of these things to get started on today because so many people have forgotten about this (point to the creation wall), which can also mean they are forgetting about the Creator.

Remember that as you create or renew – you can reflect the beauty of God!

As you leave, take a photo or a small piece of this wall to be a reminder to you to create and love God.

Close with prayer.

• What was a picture or word that jumped out at you on the creation wall?
• How does it make you feel to know God created you?
• What are some other ways we have hurt God’s creation?
• Are there things you can do to make a creative difference in this world?
• What is one thing you want to do or start this week to honor God and his creation?
